Tapestry ‘Gesù Buon Pastore’’ 1937, Rita del Bene, I-Taranto. I-Taranto, Palazzo arcivescovile (MS Inventory 38).

Basis mulberry silk (moiré), embroidered with sea silk and gold thread, ca 110×195 cm.

Label: “Allegorie delle anime che vanno dall’agnello Divino, Paliotto (Antipendium) eseguito con tessuto di Bisso applicato e ricamo in seta – oro – Bisso”.

Rita del Bene donated this tapestry to the Archbishop of Taranto, Mons. Bernardi, together with an altar cloth in tulle and sea silk, two cushions in woven sea silk, an imitation of velvet and another ecclesiastical textile. The tapestry was exhibited at the 1° Mostra Jonica d’arte sacra from 2 to 31 May, 1937. Today, it hangs in the dining room of the Archbishop of Taranto (Strippoli 2004).

Pasquale Strippoli, son of Rita del Bene, wrote in 2005:”È un manufatto raro, perché finora risulta essere il solo messaggio fornito di una documentazione ineccepibile che la Del Bene e la scuola de bisso fondata e da lei diretta ci abbiano lasciato in retaggio.”

However, Evangelina Campi wrote in 2004 that Professor Blocca Paladino, a former student of Rita del Bene, had also worked on this tapestry – probably with other students.
