Netted scarf

19th century. M. Randacciu, I-Cagliari, Sardinia. UK-Edinburgh, National Museums of Scotland, NMSZ 1913.1.15 (a) (MS Inventory 25)

Sea-silk, knitted or crocheted net-like, narrow, long, with fringe - or is it damaged?

At the Great Exhibition of 1862 at London, sea-silk products from Italy are shown for the first time. The Official Catalogue of the Industrial Departement mentions this shawl from Sardinia: «Sub-Class C. 1672 Randacciu, M. Cagliari. – Shawl made with the byssus of the Pinna.»

The Royal Italian Commission, which had brought these objects to London offered them to the former Industrial Museum of Scotland, now the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
