Gloves

Sea-silk, plain knitting right, wrist edge 4 rows left, 9 stitches per cm, length 24.9 cm, width 10.3 cm. Right glove slit at the outer edge to the thumb.


Presumably, these gloves (probably man's) also come from Taranto and date 19th century. But nothing is known about their history.

In the museum catalog is mentioned a «Byssus von Pinna nobilis, Ionisches Meer, Busen von Tarent», with the inventory number 103.238. The fiber beard consists of several glued tufts. Label: «Byssus ist das fadenförmig ausgezogene, im Wasser erstarrende Erzeugnis einer Drüse an der Unterseite des Fusses, mittel dessen die Muschel an fremde Gegenstände sich anheftet.»

In the main catalog of 1877 is listed with the inventory number 27278 a «Pinna attenuata Rv - Massana, Zickeli». Carl Friedrich Jickeli (1850-1925) was a malacologist; the shell was found in Massawa, Eritrea.
